my fave films

yes it finally happened,i was that fuckin bored at work that i decided to compile my top tonne of films because i had that little to do
so to those that wandered in and saw me grimaced over a piece of paper, this list that is going to eventually unfold infront of your eyes was the cause of such needless and silly pain
but hey sundays are quiet and i had very little to do due to the lack of stock
this means that two weeks without deliveries leaves us with naff all to fill up the store with so now if we sell something its a case of pull somethingelse into the gap and wait for the nest punter to arrive
god its boring, and as such i now have alot of time on my hands and i spend sunday thinking about my top 100 films
its either that or throw another six to eight hours into the DS and i figured i might try to achieve something a little better
as you can see i completely failed but meh, atleast i managed something

ok so now that seven deadly sins is getting close im starting to get worried
i havent dj`d in like forever
what if it all goes wrong?
what if because of the restrictions inflicted upon us in relation to what we can play cripples us?
i suppose the simplest thing i can do is rely on gumby and godsy to be there and help me out if things get too hectic
and failing that just pllay a wedge of death metal
then of course there is shaq-a-pow to think of aswell
that though should be alot easier
thats going to be a bit more fun
maybe thats where im going wrong
both should be fun and maybe im taking seven deadly sins too seriously
it should be all about the fun and not about the panic
the wine tasting i have got to lead on the wednesday on the other hand, that is the serious problem
i am just not ready for this,no chance in hell am i ready
the wines are great but i have picked the wrong ones as there is no info on them anywhere and i have only tried 2 of the 6
i hope that i dont fudge this up and leave myself snookered with trouble at work

ok so today i feel like giving some clown love
here are some lyrics to one of my fave ICP songs

i paint my face every year all day
31st aint nothing to me another holiday
all of a sudden face paintings in style
and ive been doing it since gilligans island was on
well try and live it all year though
try and pick up a chick when youre painted up like a wierdo
im 68 years old i still trick or treat
you got cash (shit) im tyring to find something to eat
and tell themold ladies keep their pennies
if aint about a quarter dont even bother
im sick of these little kids too i know you did it
put a brick in your bag and hit me in the head with it
and then they take my candy and diss
"look what i got from the fat guy painted up like kiss"
all year im a psycho huh?
but each and every halloween you all wanna be me
a gorilla a pufferfish and a bag lady all made love and had a little baby
and supposedly im the one
but at this point thats all purely speculation
on halloween people smile at me
the rest of the year round they call the police
they kick off their lawn and shoot me off their cars
but on halloween theyre giving me candy bars
trick or treat its fivthirty in the morning
im still out and standing on your lawnand im looking through your window
tap tap
i see a gummy bear on the table
"you gonna eat that?"
my paint dont come off and if it did you think im scary now shit
i look like frankenstein that been slapped with ugly
yet children hug me on halloween
3 6 4 people hate my guts
on halloween though they wanna ride my nuts
they dress up like monsters freaks and clowns
pass jelly bears and goobers and suckers around
then next when i try to trick or treat
its "get off my porch or ill call the cops you freak"
i dont understand you people but thats ok
ill see you all the next time you all try to be violent j

love that song!!!!!
never fails to put a smile on my face

Friday, 20 March 2009

ok so today im sorry i am going to have a bit of a rant
this time its about a band called machine head
a band that i used to love, and i suppose to a certain extent i still do but i cant wrap my head around their later material, that said i struggle with pretty nuch everything after their second album
you see it all started so well with one of the most devastating debuts ever heard in metal, the mighty "burn my eyes". it was just stacked to the rafters with great song after great song and as such it was a truly staggering piece of work and duly it has not been bettered by them since
with songs like davidian to open it all up and block to finish it gave metal a severly needed kick up the ass
this continued with their second album, a great album called "the more things change..."
it was effectively more of the same, but with a little more subtlety than the first album and a little more atmosphere
and also with a couple of duff tracks creeping in too! but they could only stay perfect for so long after all
but that said the likes of blistering with its dentrists drill intro and the mighty take my scars to keep us all occupied we didnt really care that bay of pigs was shite
and from here on it all goes to complete and utter shit, really fast
first off they stopped working with colin richardson and got ross (i am the nu metal king) robinson to produce their third album and lost their original guitarist
subsequently their third album felt like a nu metal album complete with terrible rapped vocals all over the place and a terrible police cover
the only songs that sounded like vintage machine head were exhale the vile and five and by their own standards were pretty terrible
the less said about album numbr four the better as supercharger is to me an album that doesnt really exist, there was very little they could do to claw their way back into my good books
what did they try next....a live album?
what a kick in the nuts to their fans!!!!
thankfully colin richardson returned to the recording desk at this juncture and things started to go the right way again as their next album through the ashes of empires was a return to form of sorts
the opening song by itself was worth the price of admission alone as it was a cracker and all was looking good
but then there was of course the rest of the album to digest and herein lies the problem, it was awful!!! the consistencey that made them brilliant for those first two albums was long and gone as ashes felt like it was stuffed to the gills with filler tracks and mr flynns lyrics were starting to get embarrasing, all full of teen angst and lacking any real conviction
then comes the lastest and still most recent, the blackening
and album that the fanbase and critics all love and can see no bad in
i think that i must be the only metal fan that really doesnt like the blackening
its too long, the songs drag, and flynn is trying to sing and he really cant!!!
the harmonies are terrible, please flynn stop trying to sing it hurts my ears, just go back to shouting!!!
ah ok i feel better now that is off my chest

shoot-em-up.jpg Shoot 'Em Up image by thoughtoftheweek

for some reason that i really cant understand why it has taken me soooo long to get around to watching this film and i am now very glad that i have gotten around to seeing it
this film is effectively a bond film but pushed to its logical extreme level
there is buckets of blood, booze and harsh language all over the place
the film centers around a carrot munching hero clive owen who saves a pregnant lady who gives birth in the middle of a gun fight and then effectively goes on to adopt the baby with his lactating hooker girlfriend monica bellucci as they try to protect the child from a truly mental paul giamatti
giamatti chews up the screen at every turn and is gloriously entertaining as the over the top villain and clive owen looks all the part a bond clone and it seems all the more baffling why daniel craig was chosen to play bond when this man seems like a much more appropriate choice after watching this film
this film scores high points across the board, the soundtrack is a great thumping rock beast that fits brilliantly with all the chaos taking place on the screen
tight and efficient direction and pretty slick looking special effects
the only casualty is the absurd plot, but everything about this film is so ridiculous that it doesnt really matter
just sit back and let your brain take an hour off to enjoy this basketcase of a film
an effortless 7/10

4.0 out of 5 stars pop for rockers, 28 Jul 2007
this is where industrial music first entered the mainstream....yes it is a dark and nasty piece of pop music but it is still effectively an 80's electro pop record with a dark heart beating away at its core.
the depeche mode references abound all over the album except instead of dave gahan's pained croon you have trents anguished screams.
its a very good album that cannot be denied..the guitars are low in the mix and seem to serve only to flesh out the angry bits.the real secret to this album are the beats and the goove of the album..its very dancable and very very catchy....quite possibly the most catchy depressing album ever made!!!
the stand outs are head like a hole..a great song that still gets aired in rock clubs to this day and the mighty sin...a much faster up beat song and then quite possibly one of the most depressing songs ever written something i can never have...a beautiful and haunting song!!!
overall a very good album..a few dull songs that can get a bit repetitive but the stand out songs outnumber the poor

4.0 out of 5 stars the best that they have done, 28 Jul 2007
ok then this is the best thing bearing the NIN logo and its depressing because its soooooo short!!! i mean its like 6 proper full songs and 2 small odd little instrumental thingys!!!!
this is also the heaviest thing that NIN have released and again is frustrating because it shows that trent can do heavy but he just doesnt seem to do elsewhere!!!
half of me hates this album because its almost as if they are tainting us by making such a brilliant album thats sooo different to the rest and keeping it so short.
the songs are great...they almost sound like actual metal songs...the guitars are alot bigger and the beats are alot heavier...its like everything has been turned up...alot!!!!!!!!
the rythm of the songs are soooo off kilter to that its almost impossible to dance to!!!
nasty piece of work!!! but tooo short hence only 4 stars!

4.0 out of 5 stars good fun, 28 Jul 2007
ok so what goes down?
well the film is about two sisters, who are depressed and are thinking about honouring their suicide pact they made when they were younger until one of them gets bitten by a werewolf and slowly but surely starts to change.
the other one then decides to try and fix the scenario as her sister starts to become more the beast and less her sister.
thats pretty much it. its good fun as it doesnt muck about to much...the scenes all fill a purpose there isnt much filler and the film moves along nicely.
the actin is pretty dammed good, the direction is snappy and the film looks fantastic. the script is very clever in its twisting of the lycan ideas and relating it teenage awakenings.
the girls look good..especially katherine isabelle and the boys similarly look handsome.
every box is ticked to make this film well worth a look!

5.0 out of 5 stars wow, 28 Jul 2007
this is the best grunge album ever made....and quite possibly one the best rock/metal albums ever made it really is that simple.
this is a towering masterpiece of rock music. the production and mix of the album is similarly fautless making sure that you dont miss a sinlge beat or cymbal tap.
the riffs are brilliantly matched to layne stayley's anguished howl.
this is effectively the diary of a drug addict and there are very few other albums that come close to scratching the surface of the emotional out pourings layered in this album.
the tracks arent as heavy as the follow up album and have a darker feel than the previous album....but it is a masterpiece.
the star is layne...the man cant sing...but his voice perfectly fits this band and there are very few other performances by anyone that i have heard that can match the emotional effec of his performance on this album.
this album can make you want to bang your head and cry usually within about 30 seconds of each other.
a complex myriad of emotions and feelings will engulf you on this album.
absolutley faultless.

The Great Milenko

The Great Milenko
Insane Clown Posse

5.0 out of 5 stars the one that hooked me, 28 Jul 2007
this is the first ICP album that i got and it got me hooked and into the whole psychopathic family...i now have stuff by all of them and i feel better for it as they opened up a huge door with this genre defining album for horror rap...and to some extent set the measuring mark for everyone else to aim for.
yes it really is that good.
so onto the material...its mainly hip hop based with some small rock elements and the huge influence of the carnival and horror films all blended into the melting pot with ease as the themes and sounds all seem to flow together exceptionally well!
for those who dont know expect alot of harsh language mixed with very violent images!!!! its great and there isnt a single track to skip on the album...but for me the stand outs are "halls of illusions" and "the neden game"....very funny stuff!!!
a great place to start as it displays pretty much everything that the clowns have to offer

4.0 out of 5 stars mind blowing, 26 Jul 2007
this film looks absolutely phenominal. it would take a fool to deny that.
the plot is a bit of a mess about cyborgs and mans obsession with technology and it goes slightly off the rails when it gets a little too profound for its own good in the middle half hour of the film and feels a little preachy for my liking.
but it looks soo good that you dont tend to notice as you just want to soak all the detail and atmosphere of the screen into your being!!
approach with an open mind and i think you will enjoy this creative masterpiece

Die Hard [1989]

5.0 out of 5 stars classic, 26 Jul 2007
ok then so then its christmas and john mclaine is off to meet his ex wife at her very flashy new office building. all is going well until some european terrorists show up and take over the building and try to break into the buildings vault.
this is where it gets interesting as they hadnt counted on one man army john mclaine to still be running around and over the building picking them off one by one.
and thats pretty much it!!!
bruce willis gets the best lines and gets to be very heroic in his dirty vest blowing stuff up shooting at villains and throwing in random bits of harsh language.
alan rickman gets to personify evil as the leader of the terrorists and chews up the screen as hans gruber
this is quite easily one of the best action thrillers ever made as the set pieces just seem to get bigger and bigger as the film carries on.
yes ok is was never gonna win any oscars but it grabs you by the short and curlies and doesnt let you go until the final credits.
ok its not gonna be for everyone as the bodycount is pretty high but it just rolls on through like a steamroller.
brilliant film...faultlessly executed

BRINGER OF BLOOD

BRINGER OF BLOOD
Six Feet Under

4.0 out of 5 stars something a little different, 25 Jul 2007
so then the history is well charted that chris barnes was sacked/left cannibal corpse and then began to focus solely on SFU...some see this as good and others not so good.
personally i always thought the rest of the SFU catologue was quite dull in comparison to cannibal corpse and morbid angel...the sound was very dull..blast beats ahoy, unrecognizable vocals and a terrible guitar sound.
so what is different here then...well pretty much about everything...for a start you can understand what barnes is saying!!!
there is alot more variety to the pace and structure of the songs...the guitars sound thicker and the drums sound similarly thicker and well just bigger.
i think that is where this album will split the fans as it is alot...i really mean ALOT slower than most death metal that is being produced these days...but for me that is not always a bad thing as it stops it from becoming dull and they prove they can still rip it up on songs like "murdered in the basement" and "ugly".
i think the thing is that this is where devildriver are going and they are being hailed for it as they are pushing their way in but SFU are drifting away from their death roots by bringing more groove to their sound and personally i think it works...but i think that the purists will hate it!

The Deadlights

The Deadlights
The Deadlights

4.0 out of 5 stars where did they go?, 25 Jul 2007
the deadlights were great...but they vanished without a trace and only left this cracking first album for us to hear. its a shame really!!
the music on offer hear is mainly nu metal tinged punk i would say...the thinking being that the riffs are punky but the drums and the slappy sloppy sounding bass is straight out of the nu metal sound.
but the saving grace is the singer duke who can growl scream and sing with the best of them.
the lyrics are great...nice and thoughtful..not just whinning about being depressed or that mummy loved you too little or too much!!
i have had this album for years and still go back to it time and again because it sounds different and very unique through its blending of sounds
the only downside i can see is that there isnt much variety to the songs, there are three slow songs set at nice spots in the album to break it up but the rest can get a bit one dimensional
that said i still think this album is great because the songs are great, but it wont be to everyones taste..i would say download some first to see if you like the sound

4.0 out of 5 stars dumb fun, 25 Jul 2007
right then this film doesnt mess about.
the acting is awful and the plot is wafer thin but it makes up for it with fast and frantic fights set against a thumping industrial metal soundtrack by the likes of KMFDM and fear fatory and lunatic calm.
the pace is fast and it doesnt outstay its welcome.
brainless fun for all the family alsong as you dont take it too seriously!!
god knows why but it would appear that the only site that i seem to be forever experiencing problems with is www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk
why is there so much lag!!!!!!
ah dear god it seems to take forever to move between the pages!!!!
why is it so hard to wander around the forum and natter with people?
i have very simple tastes and require very little to get through the day, but please sort it out....someone!!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars oh dear, 8 Aug 2007
dull,bland,unispired,plodding,slow,boring,repetitive.
pick any of the above to describe this film. the acting is terrible, the direction is average and repetitive and also very cliched. there is nothing new on display here.the first half, well make that 3/4 of the film sets the basic story and is very, very dull, the key to these types of horror are that they are atmospheric and creepy, this film is neither of those things.
the special effects are terrible and i wish i had never seen the damm thing.
the basic story is about a mother and a daughter and the mysterious diappearance of another young girl in the same building.
somehow it takes the director just over an hour to tell us that!!!!
utter nonsense, vastly overrated and not even at all scary in any shape or form.
if you want to see a good example of this type of asian horror watch "ring" its much, much better.
avoid this pile of s*** at all costs.

Live

Live
Alice in Chains

4.0 out of 5 stars good stuff, 7 Aug 2007
here we have a lazy best of made up of the bands greatest hits all from live recordings across the bands career.
for the completist its essential for the passer by its not.
it is a good live album as the sound quality is pretty good through out with only a couple of songs suffering from a slight dip in quality.
the obvious choices are here in the form of "dirt" "them bones" and "man in the box" and they all sound brilliant and then on the plus side they throw in the odd "queen of the rodeo" in to convince you to part with your cash!!! sly goats, but its worth it.

High Anxiety

High Anxiety
Therapy?

4.0 out of 5 stars nice one, 7 Aug 2007
this album rocks. its that simple. the boys are back with a bigger and thicker sound.the songs are all pretty dammed good and the better songs on show here are excellent like the mighty opener "hey satan you rock" and the exceptionally catchy ""if it kills me".
the pace is faster than the previous couple of albums and the punk element if firmly in place and they even manage to include a ska sounding bouncy number aswell.
it isnt quite upto "toublegum" and "nurse" standards but is a hell of alot better than "semi detatched" and the vastly overated "suicide pact" albums and is a return to the glory days where the humour was almost as important as the riff!
well done boys its good to have you back.

5.0 out of 5 stars approach with caution, 7 Aug 2007
so then what to do after selling millions of your debut? personally i would have tried to write another one!!! weezer on the other hand went the other way and made this....a much darker and nastier peice of work.
the change in style is evident from the very first few seconds, the guitar sound is much beefier and rougher around the edges, the drums sound thicker and really pucnh at your body.then there are the lyrics which sound that little bit more sinister especially on "across the sea".
but is it actually any good? i would say absolutely. its a brilliant album with fantastic songs my personal standouts being the crazy funk/rock of "el scortcho" and the punky rock of "getchoo",nad probably the only song that feels like first album territory "the good life".
the real change is how everything sounds,it just feels rougher and rivers puts his voice through alot more on this one.
if you are a fan and you havent got this one yet then do buy it but approach with caution as this is the angry child of the litter and isnt to everyones taste!!!

Weezer

Weezer
Weezer

5.0 out of 5 stars woo hoo, 7 Aug 2007
ok so the comparisons to all the other work is inevitable, so how does it do?
well i would say very well. its instantly accessable and very, very, very catchy. the songs tear past at a frantic pace, riffs flying and melodies all over the place. ok so this isnt exactly complicated song writing but it is very effective as the songs will keep you humming the choruses for days.
plus the variety of song on display is as random as ever from straight up rockers like "hash pipe" and "photograph" to slightly more odd pop rock indie songs like "island in the sun".
this for me is easily one of the most brilliant summer listening albums ever made.
its no where as noisy as pinkerton and yes it is very short but they do say the best things come in small packages and this album proves that point perfectly.

3.0 out of 5 stars disappointing, 2 Aug 2007
with their best work behind them and laynes drug problems getting worse they recorded this album and it sounds very messy.
the songs just ooze a sludgy and droney style...there is little to no pace about this album and it drags you kicking and screaming through the mud.
personally like it but the downside is the songs just arent very good. yeah sure there are some very good highlights like "heaven beside you" and "brush away" and "again" and "grind".....but the rest of the album sort of blends into one long dull song.
maybe that is the main problem, alot of the songs are too long for their own good and also a bit odd. "sludge factory" starts off well enough but it just doesnt ever seem to end,the same is true of the just downright wierd "frogs?"
it feels like a very arty album and as such lost me about halfway through.
also its very weak in comparison to "dirt" and the songs on this album sound alot better when they are stripped down on the MTV unplugged album that would follow this one.
a shame that this is how the best of all the grunge bands had to bow out.

Independent's Day

Independent's Day
Twiztd

5.0 out of 5 stars ha ha they be back, 1 Aug 2007
madrox and monoxide are back and they have brought their friends with them and they all sound like they are having the time of their lives.
easily the heaviest sound they have produced so far!!! the beats are slower but fuller and really thump you in the middle of your chest.
madrox for me rules this album,he is on fine form...that said monoxide aint to far behind!!!
the guest for this album really help to show the variety in the sound and scope of twiztid's work from the usual suspects of blaze and ICP through to more straight up hip hop like tech n9ne and from the metal world HED(pe)'s jahred shows up and rips the place up.
the subject matter is the same as ever so no fears about them evolving too much, the songs about bodies, drinking blood, banging girls and smoking trees are in place as ever and at times the lyrics will give you the giggles!!
the only really old sounding song is the eerie and groovy "monsters ball" with ICP yet again highlighting how much twiztid have now moved on and that ICP havent, its a good song but ICP are now slipping behind their peers as both twixtid and blaze are now dropping more vital albums....this of which is one of those!!
if you are a fan grab this badboy sharpish as it is very, very good!
we are in "green book" territory here!!

1 Less G in the Hood: Deluxe Edition

1 Less G in the Hood: Deluxe Edition
Blaze Ya Dead Homie

5.0 out of 5 stars woo hoo, 1 Aug 2007
so then blaze is dead and he wants to tell us what its like!!! so then typical pschopathic lunacy here then!
blaze has a much more straight forward hip hop feel to his music in comparison to ICP and twiztid...the rock element is there on a few songs but the majority is just damm funky hip hop beats and rythms.
as a vocalist he is gruffer than the rest of the family and quite stopstarty but it fits the music exceptionally well.
the best bits on the album are however when the guest vocalists show up!!!
jamie madrox rips the place to pieces oj his various guest spots....the same can be said for ABK,who i wasnt too sure about before hearing him tear this place up on this album. i think that is more to my taste as i like the way 2 MCs play off against each other, which blaze cant really do with himself!!!
overall this is a cracking album...full of beats, awesome guest spots and some crazy fraky lyrics!!
if you is a juggalo you need this bad boy

City

Strapping Young Lad

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful:
5.0 out of 5 stars oh my god it hurts, 1 Aug 2007
this album is the noise equivalent of putting your head inside a furnace and turning it up to 10.
this album is harsh to say the least...easily one of the heaviest album ever released...the drums thunder and the guitars surround you and then devin sreams at you and before you know it you are pinned against the wall unable to move.
so then what does it sound like? i would personally say this is the logical extreme of industrial metal pushed to its very most aggressive point.
it sets out it stall very early with the initial wall of guitars that great you in "velvetkevorkian"...but the the real beast hits you in "all hail the new flesh"...but the secret to this album is that although the songs are amazing and very heavy with riffs to die for...they all have a worrying knack of layering in some very catchy melody riffs into the breakdowns and into the chrus...witness the breakdown at the end of "all hail the new flesh" combined with what would become devins trademark of layering his choral style vocals.
there is also a odd level of bouncy factor for an album so heavy witness "A.A.A" and "detox"...though these songs are very heavy they still bounce and groove...that is the secret to this album, yes it is very, very, very heavy but it has a softer edge to let you in and suckerpunch you!
i love it and believe it to be one of the best albums ever released and easily the best thing SYL have put out and only second in devins career to his own work in ocean machine.
please if you want to see what all the fuss is about this is where it all started!

The New Black: Limited Edition

The New Black: Limited Edition
Strapping Young Lad

4.0 out of 5 stars what a way to go, 1 Aug 2007
the final album from strapping young lad is quite a swansong to say the least
the sheer size of the sound on this album dwarfs almost any band!!! as you would expect the production is ridiculously perfect!!
everything sounds so...huge and so crisp. the music itself is mind blowing....i wish i could write songs a tenth as good as this.
the songs are a hell of alot better than alien...which personally i found a tad boring...this one on the other hand wraps you up and doesnt let go.
there is a distinctive chance of pace...as its quite slow by SYL standards and alot groovier...it almost feels like a proper heavy metal record with solos popping up here and there....which in comparison to the rest of the material is pretty much unheard of.
the vocals are alot more melodic and the songs hook into your brain....the critisism of the line between SYL and the devin townsend band blurring is also quite fair to be pointed at this album as the melodies of devins solo work is creeping into this album. but that said its not a bad thing as this album feels stronger for it as alien had little to no melody at all and it just blurred into one long blob of noise.
if you are new to SYL this would be a good place to start as it breaks you in gently and it shows every side to the band.
if you want to go for the deep end start with the masterpeice that is "city"
