Red Harvest

Red Harvest

3.0 out of 5 stars number two, 30 Jul 2008
second time round for bloodsimple and what have they got for us?
more metal? well hell yes they certainly have!
this lot deal in beefy riffs vocals that veer from face melting to smoothing in an instant and furious breakdown sections with ease
the good
tracks two through seven are stunning dark helmet being my personal fave
the bad
i hate to say it but the remaining five songs are pretty poor with the opener ride with me having some of the worst lyrics i can recall from recent memory
overall a bit disappointing considering how blinding the first album was
if you are new to the band start there and then give this a try as its by no means a bad album just not a great one

Chainsaw Dismemberment

Chainsaw Dismemberment

3.0 out of 5 stars undemanding entertainment, 30 Jul 2008
new york death metal not exactly as influential as say gothenburg or florida for that matter and this album will tell you why
the good
this is relentlessly heavy to the point of it becoming painful
the instruments downtuned to a level im sure that only animals should be able to hear
the dude also has a pretty formidable death growl too
the bad
i wish i could highlight some songs but they all sound the same and run at pretty much the same pace with the blastbeats thrown in at the place in almost every song
every song starts with a sample from a horror movie and that only seems to serve as a purpose to let you know when a new song has started otherwise it would be nearly impossible to tell
that is for me their biggest stumbling block what they do they do very well but do you really need fifty minutes of it in one go with no variation in tone or pace of delivery?
that is up for you to decide but i would suggest trying before you buy with this lot

2.0 out of 5 stars blade with girls bits , 17 Jul 2008
girl from freak show turns out to be the long lost daughter of a vampire king intent on taking over the world
when she realises this she decides to seek revenge
the good - lots and i mean lots of action
pints of blood and a truckload of gore
pretty sharp pace and basic story telling so that you dont need any knowledge of the game
very pretty CGI castles
the bad- awful acting pretty much all round especially considering the names involved
for most of the action scenes the majority of the main stars look uncomfortable with swords especially madsen and lokken
the plot is also effectively the first blade film but with a girl in 18th century romania
so to say the least this really struggles with originality and brings nothing new in any shape or form to the genre
it is better than most b-movies purely because of its budget and it is easily uwe bolls best film but that said he would have to work really hard to make a film worse than house of the dead

3.0 out of 5 stars good but flawed, 14 Jul 2008
this album will split everyone you will either love the sound or want to hunt them down and break all their instruments so they can never make music again
the good - if there is another album with this many ideas on it anywhere god only knows where this is
there are soooooo many riffs its staggering
melodies everywhere easily has some of the catchiest songs within metal of the last few years
the opening five songs are insanely brilliant
the bad - the drums sound terrible
the vocals can grate after a bit
the length of some of the later songs start to suck the pace out of the album
the really inappropriate gang vocals in strength of the world
the awful ballad of seize the day quite possibly one the most cringe inducing songs ever released
overall though still a very well made album even if all the best songs are at the beginning

4.0 out of 5 stars wow, 8 Jul 2008
ok so then its another vision of post apocalyptic future and now mankind has designed bioroids to help govern themselves
into this comes the heroin deunan to try and save the day
the good- the visuals are mind blowing the plot is quite inventive and the mixture of philosophic musings to action thankfully falls more into the action camp
the bad - thankfully very little it slows down a little in the middle to crowbar some stuff about mans existence into the characters and as such it loses some momentum but that minor slip aside it flows brilliantly and looks truly stunning

4.0 out of 5 stars lost classic, 8 Jul 2008
featuring future members of arch enemy dismember and entombed in their ranks the pedigree here is high
and its very very very good old school classic swedish sound death metal
and its brilliant its like its 1992 all over again
as such it being old there is moving new here
but what is here is a premium slice of top drawer death metal that if you like the genre you owe it to yourself to own

Human 2.0

Human 2.0

5.0 out of 5 stars it hurts, 8 Jul 2008
relentless painful lightening fast blistering
all of the above can be applied to this album
it is quite possibly the tightest and most intense album that i own and its staggering how they manage to cram so much noise into each song and still make an actual song out the mess that they create
the blasting drumming will knock your teeth out the guitars pin you against the wall and then the vocals splatter your brains against the nearest wall
its is phenomenal
the best bit somehow they have layered some very catchy guitar lines into the mix and as such the songs all feel different and they start to stick into your head utter brilliance

Progress

Progress

4.0 out of 5 stars more shame, 28 Jun 2008
its unfortunate that somehow this band failed as they undoubtedly had something more to give after the hints of greatness displayed on this disc
the title is painfully appropriate as the leap in sound and quality between this and their debut disc is scary and if they continued at this rate the next album would have been a modern metal classic
but alas that didn't happen and what we have is a thumping industrial metal album where the electronics are streamlined into the pulverising riffs and all held together by some staggeringly catchy choruses
the guitars rage the drums pummell and the vocals either remove your skin or soothe your head from the beating it has just received
yes ok the tool comparison i can kind of see where they are coming from except ultraspank always condensed the sound down making it more immediate and as such both intense and easier to digest
all of these things for me are great things so give this lot a go if you want something new yet still familiar

Sky High

Sky High
Dvd ~ Yumiko Shaku

4.0 out of 5 stars different, 15 Jun 2008
if like me you were expecting blood and death all over the place like versus and azumi then you will be disappointed
this is a much slower relationship based film and as such it works very well
as an action film it fails on almost every level as the direction is still superb but the actors look very uncomfortable in these sections
the story is tragic and beautifully told and the real winner and surprise offering here
when they are unarmed the actors do a cracking job and reduced my better half to tears at its conclusion
this film really does pack quite a punch
yes ok it may be a little bit too long and the action is disappointing but the real emphasis is away from action and into the people and with that in mind it succeeds in droves
well worth a look
