Film no 29 the cook
a supposedly comedy/horror about a deranged cook who shows up at a female sorority house as their new cook(does this really happen? damn!)and over the course of the film, the weekend we see him hack them up and feed them to each other.
not that any of them would notice as they are either high(apparently everyone in college is these days) or having lesbian sex with each other.
quite clearly this is a film that has been very much designed for guys, considering the vast amount of pointless and gratuitous nudity on display, add in the senseless violence and yeah you have one perfectly designed men only sorta film.
the trouble is you would need to be as high as the idiots in the film to enjoy this lurid garbage.
this film has no redeeming features. its cheap badly made sleazy horror.
bad acting, lazy direction, no scares, no tension, bad FX, more bad acting and a truly terrible soundtrack, actually the sound itself is a massive failure, whoever set up the mics for the cast needs to be hit with bricks as he or she did a terrible job and most of the cast sound as if they are talking to each other from the next room, just awful and another nail in the coffin for this nasty piece of work.
DO NOT WATCH!

Film no 30 The little girl who lives down the lane
this is a very odd film.
not particularly enjoyable either.
a very young jodie foster is very good doing what she does best, but the film was just a bit too odd for me.
as such i really didnt enjoy this one.

Film no 31 Secretary
I love this film!!!!
its brilliant on pretty much every level.
A young lady who has issues with self harm is released from her therapy and let loose into the real world where she needs to learn how to cope and deal with the real world, after discovering she has a knack for typing she applies for a job working for a local lawyer as his secretary.
over the course of several weeks/months its never that clear she develops within the job and the relationship between our 2 leads develops.
despite the slightly suggestive nature of the story and look of the film box, i got some seriously shifty looks when i purchased my copy in my local Asda, at this films core is traditional love story, acknowledged told through some slightly more twisted conventions than usual, but its because of that and the superb performances of the leads that make this film so wonderful to watch.

Film no 26 Identity
Odd little film this, all about a group of people who get stuck in the rain at a very moody and gloomy motel on the highway.
A good cast make good work of the twists and turns of the story as the bodies start to pile up and we begin to wonder who is behind it all and whats their reason for these seemingly unrelated killings?
The direction is tight and through great use of lighting effects and the near constant rain the whole things looks and feels like a nightmare as the residents start to realise they are trapped with whatever nutbag it is stalking them.
The while thing feels very much like stalker slasher style film, but that couldnt be farther from the truth, yes it does have those elements, but it never feels as sleazy as those films.
Overall its a well put together film with a nice plot and few good twists along the way.

Film no 27 the unborn
a truly awful film and another in the long line of lets get a hot chick possessed and then have her whig out over the course of a week or so, at least that way we can put her in her underwear or the shower a few times to show the passing of time, and it dont feel sleazy then do it?
wrong!! it does and did feel sleazy, this is a film that has grand ideas but no style or enough skill to pull them off, as such what we are lift with is a very very very dull film.
rubbish and very obvious jump and scare tactics are employed throughout, as such everything about this film feels borrowed or stolen from somewhere else, but it hasnt done it a nice wink and a nod to the original sorta thing, its just used the scenes but made them worse through the bad acting!
dull and predictable, avoid this film at all costs

Film no 28 Mean Girls 2
this is quite possibly the worst and most utterly pointless sequel ever made.
i mean really come on what is the point in rehashing the original in almost its entirety but this time forget the jokes and good actresses.
this is shameless money grabbing nonsense flying on the coat tails of the far far superior original.
the first film is a very sharp and very witty look at school life, this film attempts to recreate that same feel and it falls flat on its face at every turn.
the soundtrack is sadly lacking the punch and fun of the original, as are most of the cast and from the look of it, so is the school!
thats probably where this one feels the majority of the bite, the cast here arent in the least bit likable, the first had a very obvious and easily identifiable heroin and villians and the suchlike, but here they are all pretty much just very annoying and rather dull.
sorry guys you dropped the ball on this one, i want my 90 minutes back please!

365 in 365

Film no 25 Wreck it Ralph
a film all about the villain of a donkey kong style game that decides he is sick of being the villain and wants to be the hero(and get all the love and praise that goes with it) instead.
so what does he do?
well since he cant be the hero in his game he wanders off to other game cabinets in the arcade in the hope of getting?stealing a medal from one of those.
this is where the film scores the most points as we start to see the parodies of current and older generations of video games in these cabinets, sadly once the initial moments of "oh thats call of duty" or "this must be Mariokart" have worn off there isnt really much of a story to hold your interest here, the trouble is that Ralph is a bit of a dick, as such the character is quite unlikable.
shame really because as you expect it looks good, sounds good but when the main alleged hero is a tool i cant help but feel they dropped the ball there!
on the plus side and i really hope they include it on the dvd and blu ray when they arrive the little intro movie the paperman is quite exceptional!

Film No 20
The Couch Trip
another in the long line of Dan Aykroyd films from the 80`s where essentially he plays a douche, but ultimately a supposedly likable douche, but still a douche, in this one he plays a con man faking insanity to land himself in the much more comfortable confines of the state institution instead of the local state prison.
After his ruse is rumbled by the institutions head shrink he has to come up with an escape plan, which consists of him assuming the role of the head shrink and moving cities and dealing out expletive laden "tough love" as a radio psychologist with a call in show.
Ultimately your enjoyment of this film will hinge on whether you like the idea of a con man pulling the wool over peoples eyes and triumphing over the law, after all the main character is a criminal and he uses the system to his own devices and abuses pretty much everyone around him, and yet I believe we are still supposed to like this abhorrent character.
Yes it does have a few giggles but the problem is that the main character is just too awful to like.
Sorry Dan but you dropped the ball here.

Film No 21
Mandsome
A documentary style film about male grooming.
not really that much more to say, its an interesting enough look into men and the efforts they go to to make themselves look and feel good about their appearance.
I think they were hoping to reveal some massive hidden truth about men and the lengths they go to, but all they really do is tell us what we already know, men take pride in their appearance.
some men take too much pride in their appearance and some men just dont make enough effort.
wow, well done guys, that was an hour and a half of useless info that i really didnt need to know about.

Film No 22
King of Kong
another documentary film, yes i was just rolling along the same line on Netfilx this evening!
this one focuses on the ongoing battle to have the top score ever on an arcade machine copy of Donkey Kong.
this is a fantastic film, the sort of story legends are made of, and it was a story that was long overdue a public outing, as such the guys involved are really lovely characters, as we have our underdog and the long standing high score holder perfectly playing the villain through his arrogance and doucheness.
i just hope that these guys really are like their representations in this film and havent hammed it up for the camera!
that said, i hope Billy isnt that much of a bell-end!

Film No 23
Stag Night of the Dead
oh dear lord this is a truly terrible film, and its a shame as the idea is actually quite good.
the idea that in the not too distant future and after a zombie outbreak that has been contained and controlled a shady company called Zomball has a small collection of zombies that it keeps for its own uses, the main use being part of a weekend gaming experience, think of it as paintball with zombies! except in this game you zap them with electricity firing weapons.
enter our group of lads, oddly still bringing the stripper with them?, on a stag night and up for the fun and challenge of a weekend shooting zombies.
things go wrong as is expected in these sorts of films, relationships are tested and some of them die.
pretty much par for the course for every zombie movie ever made.
the only trouble here is that despite the interesting premise and set up, everything else about this film is awful.
truly terrible special FX, atrocious acting, mind numbing soundtrack, sleazy direction (muchos lingering on the stripper!) all combine to leave a shallow and dull film that promised so much.

Film No 24
Candy Stripers
Ugh another awful alien invasion body snatchers style film.
this one involving aliens taking over the bodies of a seemingly never ending populus of attractive Candy Striper staff at a hospital.
This film is just horrendous, the cast are just pointless bland annoying american teens lined up for death, but none of them die quick enough for my liking, i get the feeling we are supposed to like at least 2 of them but it just doesnt happen, they are all very very annoying and personally i didnt want any of them to survive.
the FX are ok , but pretty much everything else falls flat on its face, ultimately where this film fails is the awful script that gives none of its main characters any redeeming features, as such you have no care for any of them to survive, therefore making the film redundant.

Set List 16/03/13

Film No 16 Youth in revolt
 photo youthinrevolt_zpsd38a53d9.jpg
coming of age stuff with michael cera effectively indulging his inner psycho nut bag in an attempt to win the heart of his summer fling sweetheart.
nice tight script, well etched out characters, some fantastic dialogue and an ingenious story about the lengths some teenage boys will go to get their end away!
Film No 17 Labor Pains
href="http://s1358.beta.photobucket.com/user/benjekyll/media/PHor8wptxbS6rs_m_zps80378391.jpg.html" target="_blank"> photo PHor8wptxbS6rs_m_zps80378391.jpg
this is a pretty bad film, lindsay lohan fakes a pregnancy to keep her job working as a secretary to a douchebag.
this much like a lot of recent rom-coms is horrendously predictable, but where it works, and it does work is the great performance of lindsay lohan as the titular character.
yes some of the jokes are old, and more than a little obvious but the story is simple and yes very throw away but its easy to watch and should raise a few giggles along the way.
Film No 18 Teen Witch
 photo toysrus_teen_witch_zpsa9f812a2.jpg
this was quite clearly a pre cursor for sabrina the teenage witch, but where that was smart, clever and funny this is none of those things.
it has truly awful soundtrack cheese and tack just ooze from every pore of the screen, this is a car crash of film making, there are no redeeming features to this film, except that it eventually ends.
the acting is terrible, the script is bland and lifeless and time has not been kind to it, you remember the saying that the 80`s was the decade that taste forgot, this film exemplifies why the above statement is so painfully true.
avoid this and watch several episodes of sabrina instead, you will be much much happier.
Film No 19 Jackass 3
 photo jackass3_zps58c7774f.jpg
you gotta know the score by now, these idiots run around hitting themselves and each other in the process of  a number of pranks and stunts, as they attempt to destroy themselves all in the name of entertainment for us the viewer to watch and wince as they endeavour to keep us interested by hurting themselves in more and more extreme and imaginative ways.
the law of diminishing returns is remarkably prevalent here, as the joke is starting to wear a little thin, they guys look old and tired and the stunts just dont really do much to dazzle the senses, at least not like they used to, the guys have now become victims of their own success by generating a slew of imitators who have now surpassed their bone crunching efforts with ease, making these gents seem a little tame in comparison.
that said there are still some very funny moments, the giant hand high five prank is exceptionally funny, as is them dropping bam into a room full of snakes, but sadly there are too many stunts that you just watch.
the point of these shows is to make you feel sick and wince in pain with them as much as it is to point and laugh at them, but rarely does this the third film scale those once frequented dizzying heights.
shame really, but i think its time for knoxvillle and co to hang up their boots and move on.

365 in 365

Film No 14 Cube
 photo cube1_zps16a366cb.jpg
a group of strangers find themselves trapped like lab rats in a maze of identical rooms filled with deadly traps that are only identifiable by a set of 9 digit serial numbers that might have a clue to which rooms are trapped and which rooms arent.
that is the key to the success of this film, its simplicity of a group of strangers struggling to survive in an unknown and potentially fatal situation.
the characters are well drawn and you instantly find yourself liking or hating them, and as such wishing them safety or death, the acting is good and the effects are great, especially for a low budget film.
throw in some nasty shock deaths and some very tense moments and we have a winner, the government conspiracy angle is a little old and tired but its not the driving force behind the film, its the humans who make the film and their struggles with each other as much as the titular cube they find themselves in that drive the film through to its heart breaking conclusion.

Film No 15 Its a boy/girl thing
 photo itsaboygirlthing_zpsa29e18f4.jpg
another in a long line of body swap films, this time its the geeky girl and a jock football star who swap.
as is always the way they dont get on at the beginning, and whilst on a history school trip they have an argument in front of an ancient idol, the god of mischief, who deems it fit to swap the two bickering muppets around.
as is abundantly obvious from the opening scene they realize the errors of their ways and notice that they both mis judged each other.
romance blossoms and yada yada yada..........
where this film works, much like freaky friday is the winning performances of the two leads, both have a warmth and genuine affection for the characters.
there are some fantastically funny set pieces in between the obvious and cliche ridden story littered with some cracking one liners, and the timing of the two leads is perfect, its just such a shame that the overall story is pretty terrible and very very predictable.

365 in 365

Film No 13 Demons 2
 photo demon_cover_zps8f2f10f9.jpg
well well well well, this is a truly awful film.
after the intensity and claustrophobia of the first film about a horror movie coming to life and demons terrorizing a room full of cinema goers, this one attempts to replicate that same feel with a the same film coming to life and infecting a tower block full of people and turning them into demons.
everything about this film is wrong, and dated.
unsurprising that its dated, but some films can age well, this on the other hand is a walking, talking cliche of bad 80`s horror.
the soundtrack is cheesy not creepy, filled to the brim with bad 80`s rock music, it really just doesnt gel with feel of the film.
too much hair, too much tack, everything that is bad about 80`s horror is present and correct in this film.
the terrible acting and bad direction are the cherries on top of the steaming pile of unspeakable stuff that this film is.
avoid it at all costs, you will not get the hour and half back!

365 in 365

Film No 12 Rabid
 photo la-locandina-di-rabid-sete-di-sangu_zps309cb942.jpg
the david cronenberg classic Rabid, is essentially an outbreak movie, pretty much a zombie movie at its base with a lady infecting people and turning them into rabid flesh hungry brain dead zombies!
starring the porn legend marilyn chambers in one of her attempts to break out of the smut and into the mainstream, im not sure if picking what at the time was a fiercely independent film maker as her first few stepping stones was a wise idea, but what she does do well is act!
her performance is everything it needs to be and more, she does make you feel a great sympathy for her character who is essentially the villain of the piece, as she is patient zero and responsible for the outbreak, but since it isnt her fault(step forward shifty surgeon!) we feel for her.
if the performance had been duff, most likely we wouldnt have cared less, as it is chambers brings a vulnerability to the character that is sadly lacking in a lot of other films of this ilk.
as in most of these films there is a slight attempt at social commentary but as with all the other films of this ilk the commentary is heavy handed and doesnt really add anything to the movie.
sit back, enjoy the gore and the great performance of marilyn chambers and this will be a fun ride.

time to try and catch up on the films, as i am falling very very badly behind!!!

Film No 11 The Bourne Legacy
 photo bourne_legacy_zps33a1ebd5.jpg
this was a massive disappointment, im one of those rare people that didnt fall over themselves with love for the first 3 films in the series, personally i found the whole "i have lost my mind but i appear to be double hard anyway" attitude a tad tiresome about a third into the second film, but even through these annoying character traits the action was fast and slick and you didnt care if the story was over the top gash.
this one on the other hand just delivers you an annoying male lead, a vacuous female lead with no chemistry  between them, an overly needlessly over complicated script about under cover groups who pull the strings behind the closed doors of the american military.
where this film fails and the other succeeded is the action, for all the bad acting the other films delivered hyper kinetic and very slick action, be it through brutal fisticuffs or insane chases it kept the pace up and running, this one though, its a bit wet and very predictable.
and has such a weak ending that just smacks or opening up the doors for a fresh new franchise.
uck, no thanks.

set list 02/02/13

in an attempt to keep things interesting and spontaneous i stole an idea from my local pub.
what they would do once a month was give their house DJ`s a pile of unmarked cds and get them to play songs almost at random.
what i did was enter the studio with 8 unmarked cds filled with 15 - 20 tracks on each and rotated the discs picking at random.
the following track listing is the result of that evenings shenanigans.
and personally i really enjoyed the night so chances are i will be doing this again!

Film Number 8 Shivers
 photo Shivers_zps83e08f30.jpg
in one of cronenburgs earlier efforts he displays what we would later come to expect, ultra violence mixed with body fear, impressive if very basic

Film Number 9 Rock of Ages
 photo Rock-of-Ages-v2_zpsea8ff2cb.jpg
terrible high school musical style rock rags to riches love story, avoid

Film Number 10 The Girl With Dragon Tattoo
 photo TheGirlwiththeDragonTattoo_zps7bb4bd42.jpg
after really enjoying the original i was interested to see what they did with this one, apart from using a vastly improved soundtrack courtesy of trent reznor and atticus ross they have effectively copied the original scene for scene making this a tad redundant, considering there was a dubbed version of the original available!

So from 9 o`clock pm on Saturday nights if you tune in on 105.5FM if you happen to be in Warminster or the local area then you too can hear the show, and in an ingenius brainwave the good fellows at the station have a live streaming service available for worldwide broadcast via the website!
So if you aren`t in or around Warminster then if you head over to www.wcrfm.org.uk then you can stream the show live through your PC or laptop!
So now you have no excuses!!!!!

So we continue on our quest to watch 365 film in a singular year with......
Film no6. The Last Horror Movie
Photobucket
the idea is that you have rented said film and some nutter has decided to record over the film with his own killing spree.
good idea, relatively well told but let down by the main protagonist being a tool and trying very very very very hard to do his best patrick bateman impression and leaving us all a little sad for him as he aint no christian bale!
Film no7. The Killing Room
Photobucket
this was awful, government conspiracy inspired nonsense twixt cube via saw.
awful awful awful.

365 in 365

ahem here we go, the first batch of flicks i have had the chance to view from the comfort of my sofa!
where possible and depending on how inspired i am feeling at the point of writing, gonna try to find the cover art for the films too!
now then, number 1
House of the Devil
Photobucket
terrible slasher flick, did not enjoy
No.2 Steel Trap
Photobucket
if saw and cube had a baby then this film would be it, but with worse acting and no budget
No.3 Dark Shadows
Photobucket
Burton and Depp do their gothy thing, again, and its not quite as successful as their previous efforts, it has the odd flash here and there but a little underwhelming in comparison to their previous works
No.4 Hop
Photobucket
the easter bunny story gets a nice neat twist with james marsden and russell brand, not bad but from the team  behind despicable me i was expecting better
No5, Iron Sky
Photobucket
nazi`s ran and hid on the darkside of the moon in 1945 and now in 2018 they are coming back for revenge and domination, bonkers, entertaining and fun.

the year ahead

a new year is here and its time to take on the 365 films in 365 days challenge!
having failed heroically to keep track by the end of march last year it was a pretty feeble effort on my part.
but this year is gonna be different, but at the same time im pretty sure i started out the same way last year!
also in an ingenious spot of thinking i also figured i should be making more use of this page, and since i became the rock and heavy metal DJ for my local radio station, they gave me a two hour show!!!
i know i cant believe it either, i thought i should have some way of people being able to see what i played incase they missed it through my bad pronounciation or missed the beginning or whatever, sooooo my setlists and links to the free material i also play will also be listed here.
my plan is to update the films every couple of days and the radio stuff weekly.
hopefully you guys might find some use of this, or at least some entertainment within these collections of words im typing out!
